Puppy Training Classes in Calgary

Puppy training works best in a playful, no harsh corrections atmosphere. Puppy brains are still underdeveloped, so they require patience and understanding. At Raising Canine, we only use positive and patient puppy training techniques.

Classes are 1 hour long, held once a week for 6 weeks at Raising Canine’s Calgary NW location.

Class size is kept small (4 – 6 dogs) to prevent over-crowding and to ensure optimum learning.

Pup Training Class Techniques Covered

Our Puppy Training classes are not just about teaching your dog commands.  It’s much more then that by including how to recognize what your pup is thinking and feeling at all times.

How to teach your little one appropriate canine play behaviour. How to recognize and prevent your fur-child from being harmed by another dog, or your dog harming another.

You’ll learn focus games to keep your puppy intellectually stimulated.  You’ll learn methods on how to interact with your pup to ensure (s)he feels safe and wants to eagerly and willingly be a well behaved dog and member of your family

All techniques are taught with gentle, positive, reward based methods that are force-free, fear-free, and pain-free.

Your little one will learn the basics such as:

  • Sit
  • Down
  • Stay
  • Come when called
  • Loose leash walking
  • On your spot

Common puppy mischief and behaviours are also addressed such as:

  • Biting/Nipping
  • Chewing
  • Jumping Up
  • Potty training
  • Barking
  • And learning basic good manners

Not only that – but you’ll also learn proper puppy care such as:

  • Puppy nutrition
  • Puppy health
  • Puppy hygiene
  • Common safety concerns
  • Massage and cuddles

Each class provides ample opportunity for socialization and playtime.  While your young canines are frolicking, we teach you, the human, how to recognize when to kindly and effectively interrupt and redirect your fur baby, and the other fur playmates, from getting too tired or over-stimulated (How to prevent puppies from fighting). This knowledge comes in handy as your puppy grows into adulthood.

At the end of the 6 week course, puppies will enjoy a graduation class where all the techniques they have learned are structured into fun games that the humans love playing as well. And yes, as is tradition at Raising Canine, at the conclusion of the grad class, the pups get their photos taken while wearing tiny puppy grad hats. (It’s really the humans that love this part!!)

Requirements to Attend Puppy Training Classes

All group training classes are only for dogs that are at ease with other canines and people. If your dog exhibits reactive behavioural issues such as uncontrolled lunging, barking, growling, or severe symptoms of anxiety when in a group setting, these sessions will be too stressful for both you and your dog to attend.

For owners of reactive dogs we recommend our Private Dog Training and/or our Reactive Dog Recovery Program sessions to assist with these socialization issues.
