Puppy Training Classes in Calgary

Our Puppy Training Classes use Positive Reinforcement Training methods and Enrichment Learning, as we recognize that puppies brains are still underdeveloped.  They require training that makes them feel safe and calm through fun focus games and enrichment activities.

Classes are 1 hour long, held once a week for 6 weeks at Raising Canine’s Calgary NW location.

Class size is kept small (4 – 6 dogs) to prevent over-crowding and to ensure optimum learning.

Puppies Age: Must be under 6 months old and can start as soon as had 2nd round of vaccinations, usually at 11 – 12 weeks old.

Puppy Training Classes ARE NOT for pups that are already demonstrating reactive behaviour (excessive barking, lunging, growling when near other dogs and/or people).  If you do register your reactive puppy for Puppy Training Classes, and then she demonstrates reactive behaviour in class, for the sake of your pup’s emotional well-being, you will be asked to take your puppy home where she feels safe and is no longer in a situation where she is “practicing” reactive behaviour.

As we care about your puppy’s mental health, we want to help you with your puppy’s reactive behaviour, so we will then offer you to attend the Reactive Dog Recovery Program (RDRP) and/or Private Sessions (PS) by transferring the full funds you paid for Puppy Training Classes toward this.

Should you make the decision not to attend RDRP or PS, we will then refund you the amount paid, minus $50 cancellation fee.

Puppy Training Classes Outline:

It’s such a wonderful time when a new puppy comes into your home.  It can be exciting and overwhelming all at the same time, especially when behaviour issues arise.   In Raising Canine’s Puppy Training Classes, you’ll learn how to prevent behavioural issues by understanding how your pup thinks, learns, and processes information.

With this knowledge, you will feel more confident and competent when training your pup to do the behaviours you want her to do.  We use Positive Reinforcement methods that include no-force, no-fear, no pain techniques that helps your puppy happily learn the wanted behaviours, reliably and long-term.

You’ll also be shown enrichment activities and focus games for your puppy to do that are fun for her and the whole family.  This allows her to learn calmness and good manners when encountering new environments and situations.

Our Puppy Training Classes also teach you how to read her canine body language so you know exactly what she is feeling (her emotions) so you can better understand how this affects her behaviour.  It also helps you to teach your little one appropriate canine play behaviour that is emotionally and physically safe for both your pup and the other dogs she is playing with.

You’ll learn how to communicate with your own body language that is clear and concise, making your puppy feel safe and at ease while you are teaching her new behaviours.

You’ll discover how and why proper socialization for your puppy is important, as so many behavioural issues occur from improperly introducing your pup to new environments, things, people, and other dogs.

The wanted behaviours you will become competent teaching your young one will be:

  • Sit
  • Down
  • Stay
  • Come when called
  • Loose leash walking
  • On your spot
  • Bite inhibition (Frantic Biting Prevention)
  • Potty Training
  • Crate Training
  • Alone Time Competence (Separation Anxiety Prevention)

At the end of the 6 week course, the puppies and humans will enjoy a graduation party, using everything they have learned structured into fun games. And yes, as is tradition at Raising Canine, at the conclusion of the grad class, the pups get their photos taken while wearing tiny puppy grad hats. (It’s really the humans that love this part!!)

Requirements to Attend Puppy Training Classes

Our puppy training classes are only for pups that are at ease with other canines and people. If your dog exhibits anxiety, stress, fear, reactivity, aggression, hyper-excitability, and/or hyper-arousal such as uncontrolled lunging, barking, growling, whining, pacing, panting, nipping, and/or biting when surrounded by other dogs and/or people, these classes are not for your dog as it will be too stressful for both of you, as well as, for the other dogs and their humans.

If you have a reactive puppy, we recommend our Reactive Dog Recovery Program and/or Private Dog Training sessions to help both you and your dog.
