Dog Training Classes Calgary NW

We have been training puppies and dogs since 2005 and follow the philosophy that dogs learn best when the focus of their training includes both their emotional and physical well-being. We use ‘Positive Reinforcement Training’ methods that are fun, safe, and promote a force free, fear free, and pain free experience.

Our classes are geared toward teaching people, first and foremost, how to be the best guardians for their dogs.  We stress that it is the human’s responsibility and priority to prevent mental health issues in their puppy and/or dog, such as anxiety, fear, stress, hyper-excitability, over-arousal, reactive and aggressive behaviour.

When we recognize it is the human’s behaviour that affects the behaviour of their dog, we can then take accountability for providing them with the  most humane training environment that does not include psychological or physical intimidation.

Register For Puppy Training

All puppies just want to feel safe!!!

Our puppy training classes are geared to teach you and your family how to raise a happy, calm, and well-mannered dog that prevents your puppy from developing mental health issues such as anxiety, stress, fear, hyper-excitability, over-arousal, reactive and aggressive behaviour!

You will learn how to teach your puppy using Positive Reinforcement Training methods that are force-free, fear-free, and pain-free.  You’ll gain insight into how puppies learn, and that your involvement with your new fur-baby is a big part of what influences her behaviours (wanted behaviours and unwanted behaviours) going forward.

We will teach you, the human, how to best train your new family member with humane techniques using fun and easy focus games that let your puppy know what behaviours you want her to do, instead of what behaviours you don’t want her to do.

We reward the behaviours we want from our puppies, rather than correcting the behaviours we don’t want

The behaviours you will learn to teach your puppy are:

  • Developing Calm Behaviour, Proper Puppy Socialization, Puppy Enrichment
  • Sit, Down, Stay, Come When Called, Loose Leash Walking, Leave it, Polite Leash Greetings, and To Your Place!

On the last day of classes, the wee fur babes get grad hats to wear for photos. That part is soooo adorable!

Puppy Training Classes ARE NOT for pups that are already demonstrating reactive behaviour (excessive barking, lunging, growling when near other dogs and/or people).  If you do register your reactive puppy for Puppy Training Classes, and then she demonstrates reactive behaviour in class, for the sake of your pup’s emotional well-being, you will be asked to take your puppy home where she feels safe and is no longer in a situation where she is “practicing” reactive behaviour.

As we care about your puppy’s mental health, we want to help you with your puppy’s reactive behaviour, so we will then offer you to attend the Reactive Dog Recovery Program (RDRP) and/or Private Sessions (PS) by transferring the full funds you paid for Puppy Training Classes toward this.

Should you make the decision not to attend RDRP or PS, we will then refund you the amount paid, minus $50 cancellation fee.

Length: 6 weeks

Register For Reactive Dog Recovery Program

The Reactive Dog Recovery Program is a  6 week (45 minutes per class) training course aimed to give owners in-depth knowledge, tools, experience and confidence to work with their reactive dog. The program is designed for you, to help your dog learn how to stay calm in situations (triggers) that typically make her/him anxious, stressed, and fearful.  The triggers may be seeing other dogs, people, cars, bikes, etc.

You’ll learn why your dog reacts, and then how to guide her/him, with a positive approach, to make the decision to have a more appropriate response, when seeing a trigger, rather then lunging, barking, growling, whining, nipping, and/or biting.  Your dog doesn’t want to be this way, (emotionally or physically) but just doesn’t know how to change her/his reactive behaviour on her/his own.

The small class size (2 – 4 dogs only) allows for a high level of personal attention to both you and your dog.  The small class size also ensures both you and your dog feel comfortable and save.

Register For Dog Agility Training

Our Dog Agility Classes are fun, non-competitive, non-judgemental, entry level training classes that are appropriate for pups that just graduated from Puppy Training Classes, and any other dog of any age.  You’ll learn to teach your puppy or dog agility skills such as tunnels, bridge, weave poles, jumps, and hoops.  Your pooch will also develop confidence, coordination, and balance.

Dogs in this class are never forced to do any piece of equipment they are unsure of. Patience and positive reinforcement is our number one method. Once an agility skill is completed or mastered, there is wonderful clapping and support from everyone in class.

Our Dog Agility Classes ARE NOT for dogs that have fearful, stress, anxious, reactive, and/or aggressive behaviours (excessive barking, lunging, growling when near other dogs and/or people).  If you do register your reactive dog for our Dog Agility Classes, for the sake of your dog’s emotional well-being, you will be asked to take your dog home where she feels safe and is no longer in a situation where she is “practicing” reactive behaviour.

Register For Off-Leash Training

Want to enjoy Calgary’s abundance of off leash parks?  Our off leash classes provide the education and tools to assist you and your pooch to partake in this wonderful experience.

During these outdoor classes, we use fun, playful techniques and games to teach your dog Reliable Recall (Come When Called) with the 3-D’s (Distraction, Distance, Duration). This way, your dog learns how to ‘willingly’ return to you when that is asked for.

As well, your dog will be taught ‘off leash heel’ (For when you need your dog close to you), ‘leave it’ (To prevent your dog from eating things from the ground and/or chasing wildlife) , and ‘stop’ (When running in front of danger such as a approaching vehicle).

You will also be provided with information regarding the hazards, the by-laws, and the culture of off leash parks.

Classes are taught at 6 different, non-crowded, Calgary NW, off leash locations which provide safe surroundings for non-stressful learning.

Off Leash Classes ARE NOT for dogs that are already demonstrating reactive behaviour (excessive barking, lunging, growling when near other dogs and/or people).  If you do register your reactive dog for Off Leash Classes, and then she demonstrates reactive behaviour in class, for the sake of your dog’s emotional well-being, you will be asked to take your dog home where she feels safe and is no longer in a situation where she is “practicing” reactive behaviour.

Private Sessions

Private sessions are offered for people who prefer one on one dog training, in their own home or at Raising Canine, for whatever reason.

Private session training can be for issues such as jumping, biting, nipping, come when called, loose leash walking, excessive barking, separation anxiety, reactivity (barking, lunging, growling, nipping when people come into house, or when your dog is on or off leash). Private sessions can also be for basic obedience training for both puppies and adult dogs.

If you prefer private sessions rather then group sessions, please call Raising Canine at 403 984 3644 to book an appointment.
